# Comparing a company with its peers

> Put a company side by side with its competitors on valuation, growth and the metrics you choose, including ones you define in plain English.

## What you can do in the Peers table

* **Peer comparison table** — market cap, enterprise value, revenue, EBITDA, revenue growth and TEV/EBITDA multiples by fiscal year, with your company pinned at the bottom above **Average** and **Median** rows for the peers.
* **Add peer** — add any listed company as a row when the default set misses a name you care about.
* **Add generated column** — describe a metric in plain English and Sterling fills that column for every peer.
* **Columns** — hide what you don't need. The table remembers your setup for that company.

## Where to find it

1. Open the company, then select **Research** under its name in the left-hand navigation.
2. Select **Peers** in the tab bar at the top.

## Using the Peers table

### Read the comparison

Your company is pinned at the bottom of the table, with the **Average** and **Median** rows for the peers beneath it.

* Scroll right to move across the metric groups and fiscal years.
* Select a column header to sort the peers by it.
* Compare your company with the **Average** and **Median** rows to see where it sits.
* Select a peer's ticker to open its own pages. A peer outside Sterling's coverage shows **Not in coverage** and doesn't open.

### Add a peer

1. Select **Add peer** at the bottom of the table.
2. Start typing a name or ticker in **Search companies**. Companies you've viewed recently are marked **Recent**, and companies already in the table are left out.
3. Pick the company. It appears as a new row, with its figures filled in where Sterling has data.

To remove a peer, use the remove button at the end of its row.

### Add a metric of your own

1. Select the **+** at the right edge of the table.
2. Describe the metric you want, such as net income or a price-to-earnings ratio.
3. Confirm. Sterling generates the column for every company in the table and keeps it in your layout.

The **+** is unavailable while a column or row is being generated.

### Choose which columns to show

Select **Columns** at the top right of the page.

* Switch individual fields or whole groups on and off, or use **Show all** and **Hide all**.
* Delete generated columns you no longer need.
* Select **Reset** to restore the default columns, order and widths. Your sort and pinned rows stay.

## Tips

* Start by hiding everything except one valuation group and one growth group. A narrow table makes an outlier obvious. Add columns back once you have a question.
* If you want a metric that isn't a standard line item, describe it the way you'd say it to a colleague. The generator works from plain finance language.

## Frequently asked questions

### The page is empty. Where is the table?

Sterling doesn't have a peer set for that company yet, so the page shows "No peers available". You can still research the company from its other Research tabs.

### Can I compare against a company Sterling doesn't cover?

Yes. **Add peer** searches all listed companies. A peer outside Sterling's coverage appears as a row with the figures Sterling has, shows **Not in coverage**, and doesn't open its own pages.

### Do my added peers and columns show up for other companies?

No. The layout, added peers and generated columns are saved per company, so each table stays tailored to that name.
