When to use Guide Mode

  • For questions about Sterling itself. Ask where something is or how a feature works, and the answer names the page and the step.
  • For a walkthrough. When an answer offers Show me in Sterling, Sterling takes you to the page and points out each step.
  • Alongside market questions. Questions about companies and markets still get the Analyst’s usual answers in the same chat.

The Guide switch is in the Analyst’s message box. Guide Mode is on unless you switch it off.

Asking how something works

Make sure Guide is switched on, then ask how to do something in Sterling. The Analyst tells you which page to go to and what to select.

Watching a walkthrough

Some answers include a Show me in Sterling button. Select it to have Sterling show you the steps on screen. When you select it, the Analyst closes and Sterling opens the right page. It then highlights each control you need, one at a time, with a short explanation. To stop the walkthrough at any point, press Esc or select anywhere on the page. The walkthrough only shows you what to do. It won’t buy, pay, delete, post or sign you out. Nothing in your account changes unless you make the change yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as the Guide button in the top bar?

No. The top-bar button, with the tooltip Open Guide, is the voice version: you talk, and it talks back and can point at things on screen. Guide Mode is the written version in the Analyst’s chat.

Does Guide Mode use credits?

Yes. Guide Mode messages count as Analyst usage, like any other message.

It answered about the market instead of the product.

Check that Guide is on. The switch applies to all your chats, and this browser remembers your choice.
