What Trade Ideas show you

  • The stream — ideas newest first, grouped by when they were published: Last 24H, This week, This month, Older.
  • Idea cards — the company, long or short with the target, the thesis, the live price and published date, the upside or downside to target, and the performance since publication.
  • Filters — company, Themes, Sectors, Sources and Performance. Sort by Date, Performance or Upside.
  • Read in analyst — opens the idea in the Analyst with its full context.

Where to find it

Select Trade Ideas in the left-hand navigation. On the Terminal, Trade Ideas shows six ideas spread across themes. On a company’s Overview, a Trade Ideas section beside the bullish and bearish arguments shows ideas for that company.

Using Trade Ideas

Browse the stream

Ideas load newest first, grouped by period. Keep scrolling to load more.
  • Sort, at the top of the list. Date keeps the period groups. Performance and Upside rank every idea in one list.
  • Hover a card for Read in analyst, and select it to open the idea in the Analyst.

Idea cards

Each card gives the thesis, long or short with the price target and horizon, the upside or downside to it, and Performance: the idea’s return since it was published, measured at the live price. The company, its live price and the published date sit in the card’s header.

Narrow it down

In the filter panel on the left:
  • Enter a company name to focus on one company.
  • Themes: pick tags. Search themes finds one in a long list, and Show less collapses it.
  • Sectors: switch tags on or off.
  • Sources: where the idea originated.
  • Performance: Big Upside, Moderate Gains or Stable / Neutral.
Filters combine. Clear a tag to widen the stream again.

Take an idea further

Open the idea in the Analyst and ask what you’d ask a colleague: the bear case, what would change the view, how it fits with Sterling’s price target. The Analyst has the idea, the company’s research and live data. The company’s Overview, Research and Priced In pages are one click away in the left-hand navigation.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Performance filter mean?

The Performance filter groups ideas by how they’ve done since publication: Big Upside, Moderate Gains, or Stable / Neutral for ideas that haven’t moved much.

Is a trade idea a recommendation to trade?

No. A trade idea is an investment idea Sterling tracks from a source it covers, published with its reasoning and its performance so far. Whether it fits your portfolio is your decision. The Analyst can help you think it through.

Where did an idea go?

Ideas stay in the stream and move into Older as they age. Enter the company name in the filter panel to find it, or sort by Date.

Nothing shows in the stream.

“No trade ideas found” means no ideas match your filters. Clear the tags, starting with Performance.
